German Party adopt the "public money equals public code" principle

2019- 11- 27

On November 22nd and 23rd, the German party CDU organized its Congress where was adopted a resolution very relevant to the Digital ecosystem, especially to the Open Source ecosystem.

Of the 32nd CDU Congress resulted a decision to make an effort to ensure that the software developed with public money should be publicly available as Open Source Software. This measure is in line with the "public money = public code" principle, which advocate the existence of legislations in public software matters. According to this principle, software developed with taxpayer money for the public sector must be registered as open source. That is, if code is developed with public money, the code must also be public and therefore must be licensed by Open Source Software.

This measure reflects the growing concern of political entities about the digital universe, increasingly present and indispensable to society.

ESOP congrats this move and hopes that it will inspire Portuguese parties to advocate and promote Open Source Software more actively.
