ESOP contributed to the study "Open Source: a dynamic market fueled by digital transformation and innovation" in the European context, promoted by CNLL, ESOP Institutional partner. The results were announced at the Paris Open Source Summit, held on December 10 and 11, in Paris.
The study analyzes utilization and role of Open Source in French companies and also considers the situation of Open Source in other European countries: Portugal, Germany, Croatia, Spain, Finland, Italy and the United Kingdom.
This study presents, among others, the following conclusions:
- For 9 out of 10 companies, Open Source is a differentiating 'key factor' in the digital transformation processes of organizations.
- For 80%, the use of Open Source solutions will grow over the next 2 years.
- Also for around 80% of companies, Europe is at the technical forefront in terms of skills and the adoption of Open Source technologies and has an opportunity to stand out in the lead in the development of this type of solutions.
- In addition, Open Source facilitates customization and the development of specific solutions considered necessary to improve the level of ‘customer experience’, which in turn is fundamental to the digital transformation processes of organizations.
- Open Source facilitates customization and technological independence, considered in this study as the main factors in the selection of Open Source software solutions, when in the previous study in 2017 the main adoption factor pointed out was cost.
- Finally, it estimates that in 2020 the total revenue for European Open Source companies will be 25 billion euros, that is about 25% of the global Open Source market and the corresponding number of workers in Europe will increase to 250,000.
